HOW TO's

Find answers to commonly asked questions.

Step 1: Account Login

Before you can change anything, you need to be inside the "Members Only" area of the site.

  • Click on the "Member Login" link in the top navigation bar.
Tip: If you’ve forgotten your credentials, use the "Forgot Password" link to trigger an automated reset to your registered email.

Step 2: Navigate to Your Account Page

Once logged in, the system should recognize you as an active member.

  • Locate the "My Account" or "Edit Profile" link. In MemberPress, this is typically found in the main menu or a secondary sidebar menu specifically for members.
  • You will see a series of tabs (e.g., Home, Subscriptions, Payments, Profile). Click on the Profile tab.

Step 3: Update Your Directory Information

This is where you make yourself searchable to the public and the Dallas legal community.

  • Contact Details: Ensure your firm name, physical address, and phone number are current.
  • Practice Areas: DCDLA profiles often allow you to select specific specialties (e.g., DWI, Federal Crimes, Juvenile Law). Check the boxes that accurately reflect your current caseload.
  • Bio/Professional Statement: Write a concise summary of your experience. Focus on your years in practice and your commitment to defense.
  • Profile Picture: A high-resolution, professional headshot is highly recommended. Look for the "Upload Image" or "Avatar" section within the profile form.

Step 4: Save and Verify

Don't let your hard work go to waste by navigating away too early!

  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Update" or "Save Changes" button.
  • The Litmus Test: Go to the public DCDLA Member Directory and search for your name. View your profile as a visitor would to ensure the formatting looks correct and the links work.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Image Won't Upload: Ensure your headshot is a .jpg or .png and is under 2MB in size.
  • Missing Fields: If you don't see a field for "Board Certifications" or "Languages Spoken," these may be custom fields. If they are missing, reach out to the DCDLA administrative office to see if they can be enabled.

The DCDLA ListServ is our members-only, secure hub for case strategy, document sharing, and legislative updates. It replaces the clutter of traditional email chains with a searchable, organized database of collective expertise.

1. Accessing the ListServ

  • To get started, login to your account through the Member Login button in the top navigation bar.
  • Once logged in, click the DCDLA ListServ link in the main navigation.

2. Participating in Strategy Discussions

The ListServ is divided into specific "Topics" (e.g., DCDLA Announcements, General Chatter, Minor Emergencies, etc.).

  • To Read: Click on a Topic to see the latest threads.
  • To Contribute: Click "New Discussion" to start a thread. Use a clear, descriptive subject line like Motion to Suppress - Blood Draw - Recent 5th Circuit Ruling to help colleagues find it later.
  • Attachments: You can upload motions, affidavits, or case PDFs directly to your post.

3. Controlling Your Inbox (Email Integration)

You can interact with the ListServ via the web portal or directly through your email, just like a classic listserv.

Email Subscriptions

Under ListServ Settings, you can toggle how you receive updates:

  • All Mail: Receive an email for every single post (best for active trial lawyers).
  • Daily Digest: One email at the end of the day summarizing all activity.
  • No Email: Web-access only (best if you prefer to log in manually to check updates).

Best Practices for the DCDLA Community

Feature How to Use It
Search Bar Use this first! Search for "Judge [Name]" or "Expert [Name]" to see past experiences from the membership.
Direct Messaging For sensitive "off-list" conversations, click a member’s name and select Message to take the chat private.
@ Mentions Use @membername to pull a specific expert colleague into a thread for their input.

Important Reminder on Security

This ListServ is a private member benefit. While we foster an environment of open strategy, please refrain from posting privileged attorney-client communications. Treat the ListServ as a secure room at the courthouse: for the eyes of the defense bar only.
